BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—سԹ and Mitchell Community College (MCC) in Statesville, N.C., have announced two landmark partnership agreements designed to streamline the transfer process and provide high-level educational opportunities for students in Iredell County and the surrounding regions. These agreements, signed in late December 2025, establish the “Bulldog Bound” direct-entry admission program and a comprehensive “Bridge to Professional Advancement in Nursing” pathway.

سԹ President Nate Evans commented on the impacts of the partnership with MCC. “سԹ is proud to partner with Mitchell Community College to build stronger pathways for students to thrive,” Evans affirmed. “These agreements remove barriers, streamline transfer, and create high-impact opportunities, especially in the critical area of nursing and healthcare leadership. Together, we are investing in students and strengthening the future workforce of our region.”

Tim Brewer Mitchell
Mitchell Community College President
Dr. Tim Brewer

Mitchell Community College President Dr. Tim Brewer, added, “At Mitchell Community College, our mission is to provide equitable access to affordable, high-quality learning experiences that lead to social and economic mobility for our students. These new partnerships with سԹ exemplify that commitment by creating clear, seamless pathways for our students to achieve their highest academic and professional goals. By establishing the Bulldog Bound direct-entry program and the nursing bridge to advanced degrees, we are providing the necessary resources for our learners to thrive, while ultimately empowering our students’ futures and the communities we serve.”

Details and benefits of the two agreements are outlined below.

Bulldog Bound: A Direct-Entry Admission Program

The Bulldog Bound program provides a direct-entry pathway for currently enrolled MCC students who intend to transfer to GWU after completing their associate degree. This co-admission initiative is open to students pursuing an Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS), Associate of Arts in Teacher Preparation (AATP), Associate of Fine Arts (AFA), or Associate in Applied Science (AAS).

Key benefits of the program include:

  • Guaranteed Admission: Participating students who meet GPA and MCC graduation requirements and سԹ admissions criteria are guaranteed admission to سԹ.
  • Early Access: Students receive information regarding financial aid, registration, and orientation early in the transition process.
  • No Application Fees: There is no fee to participate in the Bulldog Bound program.
  • Reverse Transfer: A process is in place for students who matriculate to GWU prior to completing their associate degree, allowing them to finish their MCC credential by combining credits from both institutions.

Bridge to Professional Advancement in Nursing

Recognizing the critical need for advanced healthcare professionals, the Bridge to Professional Advancement in Nursing agreement provides a seamless ADN-to-DNP (Associate Degree in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice) pathway. Students accepted into Mitchell’s ADN program are dually accepted into the Hunt School of Nursing at سԹ.

This pathway allows nursing students to progress from their initial associate degree directly through to master’s and doctoral-level programs, including:

  • Davis RN-to-BSN.
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with concentrations in Education, Administration, or a Dual MSN/MBA.
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) for Family Nurse Practitioners or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners.
  • Nursing students in this bridge program also benefit from waived application fees and a coordinated advising process between both institutions.

Funding Creates Healthcare Education Pathway to Address Regional Health Workforce Shortages

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The Golden LEAF Foundation announced Feb. 6 that سԹ and community partners, Cleveland Community College (CCC) and Cleveland County Schools, have been awarded funding through the Community-Based Grants Initiative totaling over $1.2 million to create a Healthcare Educational Pathway. Leaders from all three entities collaborated to present separate proposals to form a program that addresses regional health workforce shortages, particularly in nursing and allied health professions.

“سԹ is grateful for this major new investment from Golden LEAF, and we are delighted by the success of our partnership with Cleveland Community College and Cleveland County Schools,” shared GWU President Dr. William M. Downs. “Our College of Health Sciences and the Office of Advancement did outstanding work to craft a vision for serving educational and community needs in the field of healthcare, and I’m confident the benefits will be substantial and enduring.”

سԹ’s project focuses on the University’s pivotal role in advancing the partnership and supporting regional healthcare workforce development. From seventh- through 10th-grade, the Healthcare Educational Pathway will introduce and expose students to healthcare career options. Rising 11th- and 12th-graders will be invited to سԹ to participate in a Summer Bridge Program, where they will experience immersion into healthcare fields through interactive activities, such as lab work, simulations, networking, and shadowing healthcare professionals.

Additionally, the students will receive third party credentialing in CPR and other certifications, making them more prepared to advance in their education and careers. This support will provide students across all stages of the healthcare pathway with increased opportunities for education and certification—ultimately increasing their employability and level of certification. The aim is to help high school students, community college graduates, and current or prospective GWU students.

As a secondary benefit, the new equipment will be in place and prepared to provide additional support for سԹ nursing and College of Health Sciences students during the academic year. This equipment will enhance the lab experience and provide more efficient/effective training of future healthcare providers. This funding also reinforces سԹ’s existing community college transfer agreements.

The awards for each institution follow:

  • سԹ—$290,408.52 for equipment, supplies, and personnel costs to implement a Summer Bridge Program for high school students and to enhance the hands-on experiences of its nursing students to address a workforce shortage in Cleveland County.
  • Cleveland County Schools—$360,590.58 for personnel, renovations, equipment, supplies, furniture, and transportation to expand Cleveland County School’s healthcare education pathway participation specifically to at-risk students at CCS’s alternative school, Turning Point Academy, to address a workforce shortage in Cleveland County.
  • Cleveland Community College—$622,662.98 for equipment, supplies, and personnel to establish a Health Science Academy at Cleveland Community College, which will include health science training programs in nursing, medical assisting, medical sonography, radiography, and surgical technology, to address a workforce shortage in Cleveland County.

The awards to Cleveland County were part of $10.5 million in funding approved by the Golden LEAF Board of Directors to support job creation and economic investment, workforce preparedness, and agriculture projects.

Golden LEAF President, Chief Executive Officer Scott T. Hamilton added, “Through the Community-Based Grants Initiative, Golden LEAF works directly in one prosperity zone annually to identify projects with the greatest potential to have a significant impact. This competitive process focuses on projects that invest in the building blocks of economic growth with the ultimate goal of moving the economic needle in a community. This regional workforce development partnership will help provide a pipeline of skilled healthcare workers for Cleveland County employers for years to come.”

About The Golden LEAF Foundation

Golden LEAF was created to receive 50 percent of the annual payments made by cigarette manufacturers to North Carolina under the historic 1999 Master Settlement Agreement that included 46 states. LEAF stands for Long-Term Economic Advancement Foundation. The endowment has funded hundreds of millions of dollars in grants and scholarships to support its mission to increase economic opportunity in North Carolina’s rural and tobacco-dependent communities. Contracts Simplify Transfer Process for Graduates Entering GWU’s Program

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Officials at سԹ recently signed transfer agreements with Stanly Community College in Albemarle, N.C., and Spartanburg (S.C.) Community College for GWU’s computer science bachelor’s program, cybersecurity concentration. These contracts make it easier for graduates of Stanly and Spartanburg to transfer to سԹ.

Dr. William Downs
سԹ President
Dr. William M. Downs

“The marketplace demands more and more graduates with the skills to defend against real-world cybersecurity threats, and we’re taking the initiative at سԹ to ensure a robust pipeline of trained professionals ready for the workforce,” explained GWU President Dr. William M. Downs. “It makes great sense to partner in this initiative with Stanly Community College and Spartanburg Community College because they, too, are committed to the same goal. By making it easier for students to transfer over to GWU and thereby earn their four-year degree, all three institutions are serving the region at a critical time.”

This agreement is offered to Stanly graduates with an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in information technology, cybersecurity. The Spartanburg contract apples to graduates who complete an AAS in computer technology with networking/cybersecurity electives or AAS in computer technology with programming/database electives.

Spartanburg President Dr. Michael Mikota

Spartanburg President Dr. Michael Mikota noted, “The proud Chasers of Spartanburg Community College are empowered through the unique transformative experience we offer to Dream it, Chase it, and Live it.  We pride ourselves in our ability to offer the most accessible and relevant educational opportunities, and are excited to secure yet another seamless pathway for our students to continue their chase in the field of cybersecurity. As the world becomes more connected and the threat of cyber-attacks continues to grow there will be an exponential need for cybersecurity professionals. Malicious actors won’t stand a chance against the combined strength and intellect of Chasers and Runnin’ Bulldogs, and our students will be in a terrific position to both protect business and industries while advancing their own prosperity.”

Stanly President Dr. John Enamait said the agreement with سԹ fulfills the vision of Dallas Herring, who is considered the founding father of the community college system. “Herring believed the community college mission was to take students as far as they were willing to go,” Enamait stated. “That’s still our mantra today, and it’s represented by signings such as this one with سԹ. We want to see our students succeed, even after they complete their cybersecurity degree at Stanly Community College.”

Stanly President Dr. John Enamait

The GWU bachelor’s program, cybersecurity concentration, is offered within the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. The fully-online option allows students to complete their degrees in a flexible environment with professors who are accessible and available. This degree provides students with the foundations to identify and protect against digital security threats. They will learn crucial techniques to outthink cybercriminals, as well as the technology to support governments and top organizations in their efforts to maintain and secure data.

The curriculum is based on the standards of the National Security Agency and should prepare graduates for the professional certification tests in the field. Courses provide training in programming languages, operating systems, computer and network security, database management, data communications, and cybercrime. Classes include topics to help prepare students for CompTIA (Computing Technology Industry Association) A+, Server+, Network+, Security+ and PenTest+ exams; however, these exams are not a requirement of the program. Students will graduate with the skills needed to succeed in a field that is expected to have 3.5 million job openings in 2025.

Stanly students who are interested in the program should contact Gonda Watson, Cybersecurity Program Head, gwatson9293@stanly.edu, 704-991-0390.

At Spartanburg Community College, interested students should contact Amber Kreger, Dean of Enrollment, at kregera@sccsc.edu.

Contract Simplifies Transfer Process for Blue Ridge Graduates Entering GWU’s Degree Completion Program

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Officials at سԹ and Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) in Flat Rock, N.C., signed a transfer agreement on Nov. 4 between the two schools’ cybersecurity programs. GWU’s new online Bachelor of Science program in cybersecurity begins in the 2023 Spring Semester. Through this plan, BRCC graduates with associate degrees in information technology-cybersecurity have direct admission into سԹ’s Degree Completion Program.

This new arrangement adds to previous transfer agreements established between سԹ and on Oct. 10, 2019. “Think about how the world has changed since سԹ and Blue Ridge last sat down to sign an agreement of this magnitude,” observed GWU President Dr. William Downs. “Both institutions have survived a global pandemic and a tumultuous economic rollercoaster, and both have come out stronger on the other side. Now we’re ready to renew our commitment to making high-demand degrees both affordable and accessible to our students. Any day we can strengthen or extend partnerships is a good day, and this is a very good day for the students of our region.”

Blue Ridge President Dr. Laura Leatherwood agreed and noted, “As partners in higher education, we at Blue Ridge Community College are thrilled to deepen our relationship with سԹ through the formation of two new information technology and cybersecurity pathways. This agreement will ultimately give students a clear path into a segment of the workforce that is critical to the success of all industries.”

Also in attendance from Blue Ridge were Vice President for instruction Kathy Allen, and Faculty Chair, Business Programs Jana Hosmer. Representing سԹ were Associate Vice President for Enrollment Mavia Lee, Director of Admissions Alex Carroll, and Dean of Adult and Distance Education Elizabeth Pack.

سԹ’s bachelor’s program, cybersecurity concentration, is offered within the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. The fully-online option allows students to complete their degrees in a flexible environment with professors who are accessible and available.

Courses provide training in programming languages, operating systems, computer and network security, database management, data communications, and cybercrime.  Program curriculum is based on National Center for Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C) guidelines for Cyber Defense programs.

In addition, most of the cybersecurity classes are designed to correspond to specific CompTIA (The Computing Technology Industry Association) certifications. Classes include topics to help prepare students for CompTIA A+, Server+, Network+, Security+ and PenTest+ exams; however, these exams are not a requirement of the program.

Student-Athlete Appreciates Hands-on Learning and Availability of Professors

L’Mia Littlejohn, of Shelby, N.C., transferred to سԹ in 2021, because after attending a larger university, GWU’s friendly campus felt like home. She said the smaller environment has provided more opportunities to form meaningful relationships with others.

Because she transferred from a four-year institution, Littlejohn received a GWU Transfer Housing Grant, which offers free room and board. “The aid has given me the opportunity to get an education without putting a financial burden on me and my family,” explained Littlejohn, a senior who expects to graduate in 2023.

Plus, she was offered a spot on the women’s basketball team that ended the 2021-2022 season in fourth place and played in the semifinals of the 2022 Hercules Tires Big South Conference Championships.

Besides the opportunity to play basketball, Littlejohn wanted an academic program that would prepare her for graduate school. “I had heard how good the exercise science program was here, so I decided to check it out,” Littlejohn affirmed. “In my intro class for exercise science, we got to do labs every week.”

Working in the lab gave Littlejohn hands-on experience, such as using a finger stick to take blood and conducting a VO2 max test on the treadmill. The VO2 max test determines the body’s consumption of oxygen and the efficiency of muscles.

Littlejohn’s goal is to become a physical therapist. “I chose my field of study, because I enjoy working with and helping others,” she asserted. “In just one semester, I learned so much in the exercise science program especially with hands-on learning, which I had not experienced in the past.”

Moreover, she appreciates that professors are available to answer questions and offer help. “I wouldn’t get that experience at a larger school,” she assessed. “سԹ is a small community that helps students thrive inside and outside the classroom. At this university, you will always be surrounded by people who will support you and help you grow.”

سԹ is North Carolina’s recognized leader in private, Christian higher education. A Carnegie-Classified Doctoral/Professional University, GWU is home to six professional schools, 14 academic departments, more than 80 undergraduate and graduate majors, and a world-class faculty. Institutions’ Officials Sign Transfer Agreements in Three Areas

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Attending سԹ just got easier for students.

سԹ and Isothermal officials signed agreements Wednesday, May 4, to establish the Bulldog Bound and Bulldog Way programs. Another agreement, which creates a simple pipeline for Isothermal nursing students to further their education at GWU, was also signed.

The signing ceremony was held at The Foundation Performing Arts and Conference Center on ICC’s Spindale campus.

“This is a great way to bolster the partnership between سԹ and Isothermal,” said Dr. William Downs, president of سԹ. “Any time we are doing a good thing with our neighbors to create greater opportunities is a good day for our students.”

Bulldog Bound is a co-admission program that provides students admission to سԹ upon graduation from Isothermal. While enrolled at ICC, interested students will complete a brief online form provided by the Advising Center.

The Bulldog Way Grant provides a $3,000 scholarship to any Isothermal Community College student who applies and gains admission to one of سԹ’s traditional, residential programs.  The student must have attended Isothermal over the last two years and enroll at GWU in a full-time enrollment status to receive the grant.  The grant can be combined with other institutional aid up to the cost of tuition.

“These agreements represent our commitment to our community and students from the point of connection through the entire educational journey and the transition to the workplace,” said Dr. Margaret Annunziata, Isothermal’s president. “We are very excited about this partnership and what it will mean for our community.”

The nursing agreement lets an Associate Degree Nursing student at Isothermal seamlessly transfer into the BSN and MSN programs at سԹ.

Program Simplifies Process for CCC Students to Complete Bachelor’s Degree at GWU

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Officials at سԹ and Cleveland Community College (CCC) in Shelby, N.C., recently signed an agreement to establish a transfer admission promise program for CCC students who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in the Traditional Undergraduate Program at سԹ. Students who receive an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in health and fitness science at CCC will be able to transfer seamlessly to سԹ.

“Any day that we find a new and constructive way to partner with our neighbors at Cleveland Community College is a good day for سԹ,” affirmed GWU President Dr. William Downs. “Given the growing demand for graduates with expertise in exercise science, health and fitness, this transfer agreement between our two institutions should be attractive to students and should help fill an important societal need.”

Students interested in the program must meet admission requirements at CCC and سԹ. The Bachelor of Science in exercise science at سԹ will prepare students for graduate studies in physical and occupational therapy, and Physician Assistant programs. The degree is also for students who want to go into the strength and conditioning field, mostly in college athletics, but anywhere in the fitness industry. Additionally, سԹ offers a dual enrollment, where students can obtain their master’s degree in strength and conditioning one year after completing the bachelor’s degree.

“With the addition of the Associate in Applied Science in Health and Fitness Science at Cleveland Community College, it is important that we set up agreements and pathways like this one with سԹ,” said CCC President Dr. Jason Hurst. “We believe in helping our students reach their full potential and be successful, whatever success looks like for them. Partners like سԹ help us fulfill that mission.”

For students outside of the AAS degree in health and fitness science at CCC, the “Bulldog Bound: Direct Entry Admission Program” that was signed in the fall of 2020 is another co-admission program designed to simplify the process for successful CCC students who plan to transfer to GWU after completing a qualifying associate degree.

Students who participate in “Bulldog Bound” gain access to information about سԹ’s academic programs and access to faculty and staff who will facilitate students’ transition. Students will also receive communications related to admission, financial aid, registration and orientation early in the transition process. Interested CCC students complete a brief, online form through CCC to express their interest in the program, and there is no fee to participate.
